A thumbnail has one job: make the right viewer click. AI image generators can create bold, high-contrast thumbnail backgrounds and scenes in minutes, if the prompt is written for the format.

Thumbnail basics

  • Format: 16:9. YouTube recommends 1280 × 720 pixels.
  • Small screens: most people see thumbnails tiny, on phones. Simple scenes win.
  • One focal point: a face, an object or a contrast that’s readable at a glance.
  • Contrast: bright subject on a darker or simpler background.

The thumbnail prompt formula

[main subject + emotion] + [simple background] + [bold lighting] + [colour contrast] + [space for text]

Example: “Surprised young man holding a glowing smartphone, simple dark blue background, strong rim light, high contrast, vivid orange and blue, empty space on the right side for text, 16:9.”

In Midjourney add --ar 16:9. In other tools ask for a “wide 16:9” image or set the size.

Examples by niche

Niche Prompt idea
Tech reviews New smartphone floating above a reflective surface, dramatic studio light, dark gradient background, sharp focus
Cooking Close-up of a sizzling burger with melting cheese, steam rising, warm light, dark wooden table
Travel Traveller on a cliff overlooking turquoise sea, golden hour, wide shot, saturated colours
Finance Stack of coins and a rising green arrow, clean white background, bold shadows
Gaming Fantasy warrior facing a giant dragon, epic cinematic lighting, fiery orange and deep purple
Education Friendly teacher pointing at a glowing lightbulb, bright clean classroom, cheerful colours

Leave room for your text

Add “empty space on the left/right” or “negative space for text” so you can place your title in an editor. AI-rendered text is improving, but adding your own text afterwards gives you full control over fonts and spelling.

A fast workflow

  1. Find a thumbnail style you like (from your niche or your own best performer).
  2. Upload it to the image to prompt generator with the Engaging tone.
  3. Swap the subject for your topic and add “space for text” and 16:9.
  4. Generate a few versions, add your face and title in an editor, and test.
  5. Use the keywords for your video tags and description ideas.

Stay within the rules

Thumbnails must represent your video honestly and follow YouTube’s policies. Avoid using other people’s faces, logos or characters without permission. Copying another creator’s thumbnail too closely can also hurt trust with viewers.
