Search engines and social platforms can’t “look” at images the way people do. They rely on text around the image: alt text, file names, captions and descriptions. The title and keywords from ph-imetix give you a fast, accurate starting point for all of them.
Why image SEO matters
- Images can bring visitors from Google Images, Bing and Pinterest.
- Alt text makes your site accessible to people using screen readers.
- Clear descriptions help platforms show your image to the right people.
Writing good alt text
Alt text should describe the image for someone who can’t see it, in the context of your page.
- Be specific and short: one sentence is usually enough.
- Describe what matters for the page, not every detail.
- Don’t start with “image of” or stuff in keywords.
- Decorative images can have empty alt text.
| Weak alt text | Better alt text |
|---|---|
| image of food | Bowl of chicken biryani with raita and lemon on a wooden table |
| sunset sunset beach sunset | Sunset over a quiet beach with gentle waves |
| product photo | Matte black ceramic coffee mug on a light oak table |
Tip: ph-imetix titles are long and detailed. For alt text, keep the first clause and cut the rest.
File names
Rename files before uploading: IMG_4821.jpg tells search engines nothing, while matte-black-coffee-mug-oak-table.jpg does. Use 3–6 words from your keywords, separated by hyphens.
Captions and surrounding text
Text near the image also helps. A caption or a sentence that mentions what’s shown reinforces the topic. Use one or two of your most relevant keywords naturally, not as a list.
Pinterest titles and descriptions
Pinterest works like a visual search engine. Pins with clear titles and keyword-rich descriptions are easier to find.
- Pin title: up to 100 characters. Use the main subject and benefit.
- Description: up to 500 characters. Write 2–3 natural sentences using 5–10 of your keywords.
- Boards: save to a board whose name matches the topic.
Set the keyword selector to 10–15 for Pinterest; it’s enough to write a rich description without repeating yourself.
Workflow with ph-imetix
- Upload your image with the Formal tone and 10–25 keywords.
- Alt text: first clause of the title.
- File name: 3–6 keywords joined with hyphens.
- Pinterest: title from the main subject, description from the title plus keywords.
- Blog: use one or two keywords in the caption.
